Economics Society welcomes Sophie Dean
JAGS alumna Sophie Dean joined the Economics Society for an insightful talk on life in the Civil Service.
Since leaving JAGS in 1991, Sophie has gone on to enjoy a distinguished career shaping policy across key government bodies.
Currently she serves as Director General, Labour Market and Implementation, at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
During her visit on Thursday, Sophie provided a glimpse behind the curtain, explaining the core role of civil servants, the route policies take before being announced and the key characteristics for success within such roles.
Having previously served as Private Secretary for former Chancellors of the Exchequer Alistair Darling and George Osborne, Sophie also treated pupils to a variety of behind-the-scenes anecdotes illustrating the fast-paced and often unpredictable everyday life of the sector.
Thank you to Sophie for giving such an interesting talk, and thank you to our Teacher of Economics Grant Monk for helping to organise the event.
