Sport
All pupils are encouraged to develop an interest in sport and physical well-being at JAGS. Our PE Department’s extremely dedicated and supportive team of teachers encourage girls to foster a genuine love of sport, at whatever level they wish to participate.
Our excellent facilities include beautiful fields, AstroTurf pitches, tennis, netball and hockey courts, a fitness studio, a free weights studio, swimming pool, spin studio, climbing wall, sports hall and much more.
Pupils’ sporting achievement is excellent, especially in swimming and cross country up to national level. Many are county champions in athletic events. School teams succeed at the highest level in school and regional competitions.

Pupils regularly compete at county and national levels, as well as against other schools more locally. JAGS students commit to an extremely high level of participation in sport, and we are very proud of this. We have multiple teams in every sport, and so girls of all talent and abilities can compete if they wish to.

Music
Music is deep-rooted in our history, with both Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams having taught here. Music at JAGS is vibrant and all-encompassing, offering pupils the opportunity to explore and develop their individual musical talents. There are numerous diverse groups and ensembles, ranging from orchestras to Gospel Choir, wind bands and much more. Many groups are open to all, no matter what level each musician is at.
There are regular performances both at JAGS and in the wider community, both formal and informal, for pupils to build their confidence and explore their own musical style.

Drama
Our vibrant and innovative Drama Department provides our pupils with endless opportunities to explore their intellectual curiosity and to take risks. As a result, pupils develop a wide range of qualities such as creativity, confidence, tenacity, and individual and group awareness.
Our professionally designed theatre gives those who want to develop their artistic talents the chance to study Drama and perform on stage in pioneering, powerful and original productions. There is always a wealth of Drama taking place and there are plenty of opportunities for students to develop their talents whether in acting, directing, writing or technical theatre. We also take advantage of our proximity to central London and offer a diverse range of theatre trips throughout the year.

Art
Our Art Department offers pupils the opportunity to express themselves and develop their creative talents far beyond the curriculum. Pupils can explore painting, mixed media, textiles, print, 3D construction, ceramics and digital media both in and out of lesson time. There is a strong emphasis on experimenting, with immersive and gallery-led initiatives happening regularly on site. Pupils thus develop site-specific work, a rarity in a school. Co-curricular opportunities abound, be they House competitions, trips or our open studio policy, and are an essential part of our pupils’ development.
Clubs & Trips
On any day here at JAGS you will find an extraordinary array of clubs, activities, fixtures, rehearsals and performances. There are countless clubs that pupils can choose from, and these range from Costume Club, rock climbing and Junior Medical Society, to Robotics, Well-being Art, Debating and Gospel Choir. Whatever a pupil’s passion, there is a club for them, and if there isn’t, we encourage pupils to start their own!
Our holistic approach to education is supplemented by the numerous day and residential trips that pupils take part in. We regularly arrange visits to the many nearby galleries, theatres, museums and sporting venues. Further afield, girls take part in sporting events, conferences and trips across the UK, tying in with subjects such as Geography and Biology.

We also offer a wide range of overseas trips, which are important in broadening our girls’ learning outside of the classroom and experiencing different cultures. Recently our language students have had the chance to visit large parts of Europe including Italy, Spain and Germany, whilst further afield we had a history trip to China, and computing and art trips to New York. Students have also been on several volunteering trips to Uganda, supporting our AFFCAD charity partner.

Houses
Our House system is all about inclusivity and having fun. When pupils join JAGS, they also join a House for the duration of their time with us, which helps instil an ethos of teamwork and partnerships. Our House system allows pupils to build friendships across year groups and is an important part of everyday life in our school.
There are four Houses at JAGS, each inspired by a significant figure in our history: Caroline Bettany, pioneering Headmistress, Lilian Clarke, innovative Botany teacher, Margaret Desenfans, sponsor of Dulwich Picture Gallery, and Gustav Holst, inspirational Music teacher.
Inter-house competitions take place each year in singing, drama and sports, not to mention the huge range of challenges, from making catapults to creating sustainable house bunting. Girls from all year groups work together to try to finish on top in the friendly rivalries! There are also regular House Assemblies, and each House chooses a charity to raise money for each year.
