Joining at 4+ Reception (Pre-Prep)
We are delighted that you are thinking of joining JAGS Junior School.
At James Allen’s Junior School, we understand that choosing the right school for your daughter, where she will be happy and thrive, is of paramount importance. Here, we encourage applications from children in a variety of educational settings, as well as from those who may be schooled at home.
Our main points of entry are 4+ to join us in Reception (our Pre-Prep) and 7+ to join us in Year 3 (our Prep).
Please follow the steps below to start your journey with JAGS.
Visit
We warmly welcome you to visit our school. Open Mornings will take place over the Summer and Autumn Terms alongside weekly small group tours of the Pre-Prep and Prep. Taster sessions are also offered for both prospective 4+ and 7+ girls looking at 2027 entry. Details of these and how to book can be found on the Visit Us section of our website. In the meantime, please do also view our virtual tour for a glimpse of our school site.
Register
Registration for 4+ entry for September 2026 has now closed. Our application window for September 2027 entry will open on Monday 7 September 2026 with a deadline of Friday 6 November for all Junior School registrations.
Assessment
Following our registration deadline, your daughter will be invited to visit us for an assessment. The visit will last for approximately 40 minutes and will take place at our Pre-Prep (2 Dulwich Village, SE21 4AL).
Children will take part in a range of age appropriate activities and games with our experienced teachers. Activities will enable the children to demonstrate their related knowledge and skills. They will be delivered in a relaxed manner, with the emphasis being on enjoyment.
There is no need for your child to prepare for their visit and it is best if they are unaware that this is anything more than a fun activity. During their time with us we will encourage the children to interact with the adults present. We are aware that some children may be quieter or more reserved than others and that not all children speak English as a first language, and we will, of course, do everything that we can to gauge every individual’s potential.
Assessments will take place over the latter half of the Autumn Term and early Spring Term. Assessment dates will usually be allocated according to your child’s date of birth.
Offers
Parents are advised of the outcome of the assessment and offers are made on Friday 22 January 2026. Our acceptance deadline is midday on Friday 29 January 2027 for those in receipt of an offer.
Preparation
Over the Summer term, before you daughter starts at JAGS, we will provide a range of information packs as well as details of school events for you and your daughter to attend. We hope that these will help your daughter become familiar with her fellow pupils, teachers and the school site. We look forward to welcoming your child to JAGS!

We are delighted that you are thinking of joining JAGS.
We warmly welcome applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, from both the independent and maintained sectors as well as from abroad. Our aim is to attract candidates demonstrating spark, curiosity and potential (rather than pre-prepared knowledge), and regardless of their economic background, who will thrive in our lively community with all the opportunities, both academic and co-curricular, that we offer.
Please follow the steps below to start your journey with JAGS.
Visit
We warmly welcome you to visit our school. Our main Open Events take place in September and October. Taster days are also offered for pupils currently in Year 5 and Year 6 on selected dates – please check our Visit Us page for details. Please also view our virtual tour for a glimpse of our school site and find our Key Dates for our 2027 admissions round.
Register
Registration for 11+ Entry in September 2027 will open on 22 April and will close on 10 November.
Assessments
Candidates are assessed at a Welcome Morning during the autumn term and sit the ISEB Common Pre-test examination between early November and 9 December. We have 10 dates for Welcome Mornings across the autumn term; if your daughter is unable to make the date allocated we can suggest another date.
Welcome Mornings consist of:
- A one-on-one interview with a senior member of staff
- A creative writing task
- An interactive group task
The Independent Schools’ Examination Board (ISEB) Common Pre-test comprises online multiple-choice tests in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning and each test is age-standardised. No preparation is required. A link to the ISEB Parents’ page can be found below and a guide to registering your daughter can be found here. You can register your daughter directly with ISEB here. Registration with ISEB is free and, if you are registering your daughter for a place at JAGS, you do not need to ask our permission before selecting us as the invigilation centre. We will approve your request from our end. Applicants whose schools are hosting these tests should, however, sit them at their current school, and parents should select the appropriate invigilation centre. Candidates with special educational requirements may request extra time and an educational psychologist’s report (no more than 3 years old) should be submitted on registering.
Those sitting the ISEB tests at their current school can do so until 9 December. This date is determined by each candidate’s school and the tests are age-standardised.
Any candidates who are unable to sit the ISEB at their current school are invited to sit it at JAGS on Tuesday 8 or Wednesday 9 December, with candidates allocated sessions alphabetically. Please note that you may need to select another Senior School to which your daughter has applied, if they are using the ISEB Common Pre-test and have a shorter window for sitting the tests. Our own deadline for completion of the tests is Wednesday 9 December.
11+ Overseas applicants may apply and can sit their ISEB Common Pre-test abroad, along with the creative writing element of the Welcome Morning, rather than attending in person. An interview will be arranged via Zoom. Please note that we do not sponsor overseas applicants for visas.
