Choose age at entry
We are delighted you are thinking about joining JAGS. Details of how our admissions process works are detailed below.
Joining at 4+ Reception (Pre-Prep School)
We are delighted that you are thinking of joining JAGS Junior School.
At James Allen’s Junior School, we understand that choosing the right school for your daughter, where she will be happy and thrive, is of paramount importance. Here, we encourage applications from children in a variety of educational settings, as well as from those who may be schooled at home.
Our main points of entry are 4+ to join us in Reception (our Pre-Prep School) and 7+ to join us in Year 3 (our Prep School).
Please follow the steps below to start your journey with JAGS.
Visit
We warmly welcome you to visit our school. Our main Open Event will be held on the 1st October 2022 and you can reserve your place here. Please also view our virtual tour for a glimpse of our school site. Once you have registered your daughter for September 2023 entry, you are welcome to email Mrs Anne Long in the Pre-Primary Office at pre-prep@jags.org.uk to book a mid-week morning tour of the school. These are strictly via appointment only.
Register
Registration for 4+ entry to JAGS for a September 2023 start, will open on Monday 5 September 2022.
Please note that our deadline for submission of a registration form is 4pm on Friday 11 November 2022.
Assessment
After our registration deadline closes your child will be invited to visit us during one of our assessment mornings. The visit will last for approximately one hour and will take place at the Pre-Prep (2 Dulwich Village, SE21 4EL).
The children attend in small groups of similarly aged children and take part in a number of activities, all of which are designed to enable them to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and attitudes to learning. These activities are age appropriate and will be delivered to the children in a relaxed manner, with the emphasis being on enjoyment. The children engage in “free play” as well as playing simple games 1:1 with staff.
There is no need for your child to undergo any preparation before their visit and it is best if they are unaware that the day is anything more than a fun day out. During their hour with us we will encourage the children to interact with the adults present. As we are aware that some children may be quieter or more reserved than others, we will, of course, do everything that we can to gauge every individual’s potential.
These assessments will be held on one of the following days: 2 December 2022, 3 December 2022 or 5 January 2023 – your assessment date will usually be allocated according to your child’s date of birth.
Offers
Parents will be advised of the outcome of the assessment morning and offers will be made on Friday, 20 January 2023. Offers must strictly be accepted by midday on 27 January 2023.
Preparation
Over the Summer term, before you daughter starts at JAGS, we will provide a range of information packs as well as details of school events for you and your daughter to attend. We hope that these will help your daughter become familiar with her fellow pupils, teachers and the school site. We look forward to welcoming your child to JAGS!

Joining at 11+ (Year 7)
We are delighted that you are thinking of joining JAGS.
We warmly welcome applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds, from both the independent and maintained sectors as well as from abroad. Our aim is to attract candidates demonstrating spark, curiosity and potential, rather than pre-prepared knowledge, who will thrive in our lively community with all the opportunities, both academic and co-curricular, that we offer.
Please follow the steps below to start your journey with JAGS.
Visit
We warmly welcome you to visit our school. Our main Open Events take place in September and October, but we also offer webinars and taster days. Please also view our virtual tour for a glimpse of our school site.

If you would like to apply to JAGS, please complete the online application form. Applications should be made by 31 October in the year preceding possible entry. For example, 11+ applications can be made between the start of the summer term when an applicant is in Year 5 and 31 October when she is in Year 6. Bursary and scholarships forms are completed separately. Registration for entry in September 2023 will open at the start of the summer term 2022.
Assessments
Candidates are assessed at a Welcome Morning during the autumn term and sit the ISEB Common Pre-test examination between early November and early January. We have 10 dates for Welcome Mornings across the autumn term; if your daughter is unable to make the date allocated we can suggest another date.
Welcome Mornings consist of:
- A one-on-one interview with a senior member of staff
- A creative writing task
- An interactive group task
The Independent Schools’ Examination Board (ISEB) Common Pre-test comprises online multiple-choice tests in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning and each test is age-standardised. No preparation is required. A link to the ISEB Parents’ page can be found below. Candidates with special educational requirements may request extra time and an educational psychologist’s report (no more than 3 years old) should be submitted on registering.
Applicants may sit the examination at their current school any time from early November until early January, but by Tuesday 11 January at the latest. This date is determined by each candidate’s school; as the tests are age-standardised there is no disadvantage in pupils sitting them before Christmas. Our own Year 6 pupils will be sitting the tests in early December.
Any candidates who are unable to sit the ISEB at their current school are invited to sit the ISEB Common Pre-test at JAGS on Thursday 5 January 2023.
