Joining at 4+ Reception (Pre-Prep School)
We are delighted that you are thinking of joining JAGS Junior School.
At James Allen’s Junior School, we understand that choosing the right school for your daughter, where she will be happy and thrive, is of paramount importance. Here, we encourage applications from children in a variety of educational settings, as well as from those who may be schooled at home.
Our main points of entry are 4+ to join us in Reception (our Pre-Prep School) and 7+ to join us in Year 3 (our Prep School).
Please note that applications for 4+ entry in September 2024 has now closed. Applications for September 2025 entry will open in September 2024.

Once you have registered your daughter for September 2024 entry, you are welcome to email Mrs Anne Long in the Pre-Primary Office at pre-prep@jags.org.uk to book a mid-week tour of the school. These tours are strictly via appointment only.

Assessment
After our registration deadline closes your child will be invited to visit us during one of our assessment mornings. The visit will last for approximately one hour and will take place at the Pre-Prep (2 Dulwich Village, SE21 4AL).
The children attend in small groups of similarly aged children and take part in a number of activities, all of which are designed to enable them to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and attitudes to learning. These activities are age appropriate and will be delivered to the children in a relaxed manner, with the emphasis being on enjoyment. The children engage in “free play” as well as playing simple games 1:1 with staff.
There is no need for your child to undergo any preparation before their visit and it is best if they are unaware that the day is anything more than a fun day out. During their hour with us we will encourage the children to interact with the adults present. As we are aware that some children may be quieter or more reserved than others, we will, of course, do everything that we can to gauge every individual’s potential.
These assessments will be held on one of the following days: 1 December 2023, 2 December 2023 or 8 January 2024 – your assessment date will usually be allocated according to your child’s date of birth.
Offers
Parents will be advised of the outcome of the assessment morning and offers will be made on Friday, 19 January 2024. Offers must strictly be accepted by midday on Friday 26 January 2024.
Preparation
Over the Summer term, before you daughter starts at JAGS, we will provide a range of information packs as well as details of school events for you and your daughter to attend. We hope that these will help your daughter become familiar with her fellow pupils, teachers and the school site. We look forward to welcoming your child to JAGS!

The deadline for registering for 11+ Entry for September 2024 Entry has now passed and we are not accepting any late applications. If you are interested in 11+ Entry for September 2025, the application window will open from the start of the 2024 Summer Term.
Assessments
Candidates are assessed at a Welcome Morning during the autumn term and sit the ISEB Common Pre-test examination between early November and early January. We have 10 dates for Welcome Mornings across the autumn term; if your daughter is unable to make the date allocated we can suggest another date.
Welcome Mornings consist of:
- A one-on-one interview with a senior member of staff
- A creative writing task
- An interactive group task
The Independent Schools’ Examination Board (ISEB) Common Pre-test comprises online multiple-choice tests in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning and each test is age-standardised. No preparation is required. A link to the ISEB Parents’ page can be found below. Please register your daughter with ISEB for the Common Pre-Test via the link below before submitting a JAGS Registration form. Registration with ISEB is free and, if you are registering your daughter for a place at JAGS, you do not need to ask our permission before selecting us as the invigilation centre. Applicants whose schools are hosting these tests should, however, sit them at their current school, and select the appropriate invigilation centre. Candidates with special educational requirements may request extra time and an educational psychologist’s report (no more than 3 years old) should be submitted on registering.
Those sitting the ISEB tests at their current school can do so from early November until early January, but by Thursday 11 January at the latest. This date is determined by each candidate’s school; as the tests are age-standardised there is no disadvantage in pupils sitting them before Christmas. Our own Year 6 pupils will be sitting the tests in early December.
Any candidates who are unable to sit the ISEB at their current school are invited to sit it at JAGS on Monday, 8 January 2024. Please note that you may need to select another Senior School to which your daughter has applied, if they are using the ISEB Common Pre-test and have a shorter window for sitting the tests. Our own deadline for completion of the tests is Thursday, 11 January.
11+ Overseas applicants may apply and can sit their ISEB Common Pre-test abroad, along with the creative writing element of the Welcome Morning, rather than attending in person. An interview will be arranged via Zoom. Please note that we do not sponsor overseas applicants for visas.
