It is our absolute aim for JAGS to continue to attract intellectually curious girls, regardless of their economic background, to ensure that our unique JAGS education is available to all those who will thrive here and make the most of our exceptional education.
Fee Assistance
In order to ensure these opportunities, the James Allen Bursary scheme is available at our 11+ and 16+ entry points to help parents with the school fees.
Our bursaries are crucial in making our education accessible to everyone, not just to those whose families can afford the fees. We provide financial assistance for up to 100% of fees as well as a contribution towards the cost of uniform, travel, trips and lunches, reflective of the size of the main award. One in six of our Senior School pupils are in receipt of a bursary, with the scheme covering well over 80% of their fees.
Bursaries may be awarded to new pupils joining us at 11+ or 16+ but may also help a current pupil continue her education at JAGS should her family’s financial circumstances change.
If you are interested in supporting our bursary programme, please visit our Support Us page.

Complete the Registration form
ticking the relevant box to indicate a wish to apply for financial assistance (a Bursary Award). If you are in receipt of Universal Credit or your daughter is in receipt of Pupil Premium (free school lunches), and have proof of such, you should complete the Pupil Premium Registration form, which waives the registration fee.
From September onwards
bursary forms are sent as linked documents to all those indicating a wish to apply. The deadline for submission of a completed Bursary application is 22 October for 16+ applicants and 7 November for 11+ applicants. It is each parent’s responsibility to ensure that an application is submitted by the stated deadline; should you have difficulty completing the form please feel free to alert us by email at feesupport@jags.org.uk ahead of the deadline. Please note that all those with parental responsibility must take part in the process.
NB: incomplete forms will not be assessed.
Each candidate is invited to attend the relevant entrance assessments in the Autumn term.
11+ Early Release date
We have around 150 bursary applications annually for 11+ entry, and a finite budget available, which stretches to approximately 20 11+ bursary awards each year with the scheme covering well over 80% of their fees. A decision on whether or not to proceed with a Bursary application is informed initially, therefore, by an applicant’s performance in our entrance assessments in relation to other applicants who have applied for financial assistance. Where parents have indicated that they would be unable to accept a full fee-paying offer in the absence of funding, we will be able then, on Wednesday, 11 December, to inform some of these families that we are regretfully unable to proceed, both with the bursary application and therefore also with the application for a place at JAGS.
Remaining applicant parents will be invited by the Bursary Administration Ltd (BAL) for a video interview to discuss their financial circumstances in December (11+ & 16+) and January (11+).
Once BAL have completed their analysis of the various bursary applications, they then provide a report to us, on the level of support each candidate may require. They may also find that some candidates do not qualify for support, based on their parents’ household income or assets. Our Director of Finance and Head review the reports and then take a decision on the level of financial support that may be offered to each applicant.
Offers
Should we be able to offer financial assistance, we aim to include the relevant numbers in our general offer for 16+ applicants in the week commencing 4 December and on Thursday, 13 February for 11+ entry. Some candidates may be waitlisted for funding.
Accepting an offer
Should you wish to accept an offer of a place with funding, you should do so by the stated deadline for acceptances. Remaining funds not accepted by the deadline are released to those on the Waiting List at that point, if not before.
Conditions of a Bursary Award
A condition of the Bursary award is that you will be required to take part in a review of financial circumstances each year during a pupil’s career at JAGS. We would not ordinarily expect the level of the award to change significantly unless your financial circumstances have changed significantly.
The annual assessment process normally starts in the spring and is expected to be concluded before the end of the Summer term.
We do reserve the right to remove the award or reduce the award if you do not participate fully in the annual review process.
