JAGS pupils buzzing after big win at Cambridge MFL Spelling Bee

Last week several JAGS students travelled to the University of Cambridge to compete in the National Finals of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Spelling and Translation Bees.

While tens of thousands of pupils across the country entered the contest in October, the JAGS students fought off tough competition to emerge victorious in three categories:

Zoe (Year 7 Spanish spelling bee)

Avanti (Year 7 French spelling bee)

Madalena (Year 9 Spanish translation bee)

The victories are the product of hours of hard work from the pupils and their language teachers throughout the year in preparation.

Thank you to Routes into Languages for organising such an enriching contest and congratulations to the winners and the JAGS MFL department on such an amazing achievement!

“The foreign languages spelling bee has been truly amazing experience, every step of the way. It’s been a wonderful sort of ladder, climbing up the rungs, learning more, and being encouraged to enjoy languages from a different viewpoint. In the lead up to the nationals, we practised every Thursday late lunch with Mr Roussel.

“Going to Cambridge was such an amazing opportunity and everyone who was going knew we would all make the most of it. In a way we were terrified, as the nerves had built up over the last couple of weeks, but we decided to seize the day despite that. Students, their parents and teacher came from all over the United Kingdom for this National Final.

“JAGS won both first places in this National competition, which is truly amazing! We returned triumphant and happy! The foreign language spelling bee has been an experience I will never forget thanks to the wonderful languages department here at JAGS and thanks to my wonderful supportive mum!” Avanti, Year 7
