13th February 2026: Issue 83

Welcome from the Head

Dear Parents

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, as we reach a rainy half term after a packed five weeks of 2026.

It’s been super to welcome our fantastic parent body into school over the past few days. Year 11 parents had a busy Parents’ Evening following our mock exams, Year 12 parents joined us for an informative UCAS Evening, while parents from Years 8 and 9 shared their thoughts and feedback in our first Parents’ Forum this year. We look forward to sharing this special time with parents from the remaining year groups across this term. Thank you also to those parents who took the time to complete our parents’ survey earlier in the term; we are busy reviewing responses now and look forward to sharing headlines with you at a later date.

On Thursday 12 March, we host our inaugural 1741 Benefactors’ Event. We are so grateful to all members of the parent community who have donated to the James Allen’s Bursary Fund and this event will give us the chance to say thank-you in person. All donors are welcome to join us; further details are found in the newsletter, or by contacting our Head of Development and Alumnae Relations Karen Doyle.

Well done to all our students who have taken part in Interhouse Sports, despite the wet weather! Our girls have also been busy singing Evensongs at the Royal Naval Chapel in Greenwich and at Christ’s Chapel in the Village, not to mention the Chamber Music Festival and Piano Festival this week. Add into the mix our celebration of Multicultural Evening, and you glimpse a sense of the busy, purposeful and fulfilling experience of each week at JAGS. Multicultural Evening was fantastically hosted by our Head Girl team and scaffolded by our Drama Department, with vibrant performances from across the year groups; a special shout-out to the wonderful Catering Team for the magnificent feast we all enjoyed too.

Wishing all JAGS families a great half term break; to those preparing for Year 13 Mocks, I hope the week is a systematic balance of revision and recuperation after a busy first half of term.

With best wishes,

Mrs Alex Hutchinson
Head

Key Stage 3 Update

What a frantic and wonderful half term this has been! The weather has been very much against us, but it has not dampened our spirits at all.

An example of this joy was seen at PopFest 2026, where bands from across the school came together for a proper jam session! The Year 7 bands also had the chance to perform for their year group during an additional assembly arranged by Miss Corp. Well done, everyone!

It is always a busy time for Year 9 as they choose their GCSE options and learn more about their GCSE courses and pathways. It was a pleasure to welcome parents on site for our first Year 9 Options Evening, during which our new Deputy Head Academic spoke about the options process. Since then, the 1:1 interviews have been in full swing, and it seems that everyone has now made their choices.

Myfanwy Bournon, Head of KS3

  • Year 9 continued. . .

This term’s PSHCE curriculum for Year 9 also gave us the opportunity to think about how to maintain good mental health. Powerful messages were delivered by the Daniel Spargo Mabbs Foundation and by Dick Moore, who returned again this year to speak to the girls about staying safe and strengthening their positive sense of self.

  • Celebrating our community

It was wonderful to see so many KS3 students take part in Multicultural Evening. We also rounded off the term with a celebratory assembly for Lunar New Year. My thanks go to Audrey, Annabelle, Erica and Evelyn in Year 7 for their fabulous contributions to the presentation. As we enter the Year of the Horse, I found myself reflecting on the positive attributes associated with this sign: sociability, openness, courage, passion, eloquence and moral uprightness. I believe JAGS students, whatever their year of birth, demonstrate these traits daily.

  • Happy Half Term

I would like to wish all those celebrating Lunar New Year a healthy and happy time with friends and family.

There is no homework over the break, so please take the opportunity to switch off devices, read plenty of good books and enjoy a well deserved rest.

    Happy Half Term, everyone!

Key Stage 4 Update

What a jam‑packed and exciting half term it has been for KS4. We are incredibly proud of all the girls and everything they have achieved over the past few weeks.

KS4 began the term with an inspiring assembly led by a speaker from UES Education, focusing on Overseas Pathways at JAGS. Students heard about the journeys of former JAGS girls who have gone on to study at universities across the world. The session also helped to dispel several common misconceptions about studying abroad and showed the girls that international pathways are both accessible and exciting.

Year 10 at Science Live

Year 10 had the opportunity to attend Science Live, where they met and learned from five of Britain’s leading scientists, all working at the cutting edge of their fields. Alongside the inspiration, students also benefited from practical exam advice from an experienced GCSE science examiner, which will be invaluable as they move towards their own assessments.

Hannah Dodson, Head of KS4

  • Year 10 continued . . .

A particular highlight was hearing from Dr Maggie Aderin‑Pocock, space scientist, lecturer and presenter of the BBC’s The Sky at Night. She captivated the students with her infectious enthusiasm for space exploration. Dr Aderin‑Pocock shared stories about her work developing advanced optical systems and telescopes, including instruments used for satellite communication and deep‑space observation. The girls especially enjoyed hearing that she even has a Barbie doll created in her honour, celebrating her impact on science and education.

  • Congratulations to Year 11

A huge well done to Year 11 on completing their mock examinations. Their commitment, resilience and focus throughout the exam period were truly impressive.

To celebrate, the year group enjoyed a well‑deserved Post‑Mock Disco. The girls spent the evening enjoying pizza, photo‑booth pictures and plenty of Just Dance. Even Miss Mayo and I joined in for a couple of numbers, much to their amusement.

It was also wonderful to see so many of you at Parents’ Evening. Many families commented on how valuable the in‑person discussions were in supporting the girls’ progress and helping them prepare for success in the summer exams.

Year 11 have also been looking ahead to the future, with the Choices App now live for their A Level selections. This week they had the opportunity to speak with Sixth Form Prefects, gaining real insight into what different subjects are like. The girls can reflect on all the information they have gathered over the break before making their final decisions once we return.

Thank you to all our KS4 students for their energy, positivity and hard work this term. We wish everyone a well‑deserved half‑term break.

Sixth Form Update

It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the year, with Year 13 students well in their final months at JAGS! Amid a busy schedule of academic, co-curricular and super-curricular Sixth Form activity, students have been kind to themselves with a ‘cookies and PJs’ day in the Sixth Form Centre.

The Sixth Form community continues to embrace school life wholeheartedly. Multicultural Evening, PopFest, Evensong, club leadership, the Bettany House’s Would I Lie to You? charity event and student coaching are just some of the ways our students are leading, supporting others and making their mark this year.

Whilst Year 13 students have seamlessly met A Level coursework deadlines and focused diligently on their specifications and exam technique ahead of the post half term mocks, Year 12s have embraced opportunities to explore their futures through lectures and their Higher Education and Careers Day. Many offered warm thanks to Mrs Allan and Ms Brookes after a thought provoking programme. It was also a privilege to discuss the university application process with Year 12 parents on Wednesday evening. Students have now also been encouraged to apply for student leadership roles; we wonder whether they will surpass last year’s impressive 96% application rate – it promises to be a competitive field!

I hope all students enjoy a productive half term, with plenty of rest alongside the necessary preparation for upcoming exams.

Happy Half Term!

Mat Weeks, Head of Sixth Form

Multicultural Evening 2026

Multicultural Day and Evening returned to JAGS in spectacular style this year, filling the school with creativity and an incredible sense of community. It was a joyful celebration of the cultures, stories, and identities which make JAGS so special.

Students brought extraordinary energy to the day, from powerful performances and expressive dance to vibrant fashion and delicious food representing cultures from around the world, all while raising money for UNICEF. The excitement across the school was infectious, and it was wonderful to see students and staff come together to create such a memorable occasion.

Once again, we extend a huge thank you to our Drama Department and the dedicated student organisers, whose imagination and hard work made this year’s celebration truly special.

As she marks her final Multicultural Evening at JAGS, Malathi (Y13) reflects below on what the event has meant to her:

  • “A truly beautiful event . . .

Malathi (Y13): “Multicultural Evening is a big highlight of my time at JAGS. It is truly a beautiful event that proudly displays not only all the diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds, but also the immense talent of all the performers. As part of the Tamil Society (TSOC), I’ve taken part in a few dance performances, and it has been really enjoyable, creating some fun memories I’ll cherish forever. I’ll always miss the times we’d get together to come up with choreography, rehearse every lunch and after school, and just spend time with my close friends from TSOC, whom I wouldn’t see as much otherwise.

Performing on stage is so rewarding – hearing the support from the audience for our dances makes me so proud to showcase my culture and grateful that we get such an opportunity. And of course, the event itself is always so exciting. It’s wonderful to see different kinds of shows such as dance routines, songs, poem recitals and instrumental performances. Multicultural Evening 2026 showed such a wide range of performances from so many different cultures – from the big group dances by the African Caribbean Society (ACS) and the French students, to the solo performances of German singing and Indian poems. I’m so happy that JAGS gives us this opportunity to appreciate all these different backgrounds, and I hope to see even more variety and talent in the future.”

Music

PopFest 2026

On Friday 23 January, the VWA was transformed into an arena as solo singers, duos and bands competed in PopFest 2026. From the 49 original audition videos, around half the acts made it through to the live evening event, and the audience was treated to five sets of the best cover songs, performed live or accompanied by backing tracks.

The adjudicator, Trudy Kerr, made special mention of Maya and Eliza’s blended harmonies, the band Ladybird – especially Charlie, the drummer – and of Josie, who accompanied herself on the piano. In the end, however, it was Anwen and Charlotte who were crowned PopFest Winners 2026 for their version of Olivia Rodrigo’s drivers license.

Elinor Corp, Deputy Director of Music

  • Piano Festival

Our annual Piano Festival took place on Thursday, with students from across the school coming together to tread the keys in our VWA. The afternoon once again proved a joyful and uplifting celebration of JAGS pianists, with the wide range of pieces performed testament to their individuality.

Russian

The Faking of Russian Art Lecture

Rose (Y11): “Last Thursday, students of Russian from Years 11, 12, and 13 travelled to St Paul’s Girls’ School to hear their annual Russian lecture. James Butterwick, a specialist and dealer in Ukrainian and European art, delivered a fantastic lecture on the mass fakery and fraud of Russian avant-garde art. The lecture explored how waves of forgeries flooded galleries and collections across the world, even though the artworks were of dubious quality and even more dubious provenance.

“The Russian avant-garde contained some of the greatest names of its generation: Malevich, Kandinsky, Chagall, to name a few. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, a flood of newly discovered works appeared on global markets with no verifiable provenance or exhibition history. Their authenticity was supported only by invalid documents from discredited art historians. Students learnt the fascinating methods used by the now disgraced InCoRM (International Chamber of Russian Modernism) to manufacture authenticity in order to exhibit, and later sell, the fake paintings, with members of InCoRM all profiting immensely.

“Questions after the lecture led to fascinating glimpses of Butterwick’s life as a student of Russian living in the Soviet Union, and his thoughts on contemporary Ukrainian and Russian art. Overall, the evening was greatly enjoyable, with gripping conversation alongside delicious traditional honey cake and tea.”

Italian

Carnival Mask Workshop

The Italian Y8 classes had a fantastic time at their Carnival mask workshop!

Before getting creative, students enjoyed a full lesson on the history of this much‑loved Italian celebration and explored some of the most iconic commedia dell’arte characters. Their artistic experience was made even sweeter with some delicious chiacchiere to enjoy along the way.

Co-curricular

Dry Stone Walling Project

At the end of January, students and staff got stuck into our dry stone walling project in the Botany Gardens for a mindful, meditative and incredibly satisfying few days of work.

Our wall, beside the pond, will provide a haven for wildlife such as newts, frogs, insects and, over time, even hedgehogs. As it weathers, the 400‑million‑year‑old slate will capture seeds from drought‑tolerant plants. Their roots will extend through existing cracks and holes, strengthening the structure and giving it a green, living surface.

Lilian Clarke built a drystone wall in the Botany Gardens nearly a century ago (swipe through to see the photo) to teach students about the importance of this unique habitat. How special that almost 100 years later, we can bring students, teachers and support staff together using those same techniques.

A huge thanks to Duncan Nuttall for visiting JAGS and teaching us this traditional heritage skill!

Charity

Bettany Charity Day

Bettany House hosted a special JAGS All Stars edition of Would I Lie to You? and raised an incredible £1,074.42 for Save the Children UK.

A huge thank you to our fantastic staff contestants for being such great sports, and to everyone who donated so generously.

Careers

Our Careers Department has been busy organising valuable networking events and work experience opportunities to support our pupils as they consider their next steps.

Follow the tabs below to learn more:

  • Dentistry Work Experience

We are very grateful to parents for their support of the Higher Education and Careers programme at JAGS. Through our parent network, four Year 12 students had the opportunity to take part in Dentistry work experience during the Christmas holiday.

Hannah (Y12): “Over the Christmas holidays, we were fortunate enough to visit Dr Patel’s dental practice in Streatham for three days. We were able to observe what day‑to‑day life is like in a dental practice and see the importance of communication between patients and the dental team of dentists, nurses and receptionists.

“The team was incredibly welcoming, and Dr Dipen and Viyona Patel offered valuable advice for interviews and university applications, as well as answering any questions we had.
We saw a range of different procedures, including extractions (one of a particularly difficult nature), fillings and hygiene appointments, as well as many check‑ups. Watching the dentists calm anxious patients and children was one of the most memorable moments, and it was inspiring to see their care and genuine desire to alleviate their patients’ pain.

“The experience was incredibly valuable, as we were able to learn about dentistry as a career from experienced professionals, and it has provided us with knowledge that will help strengthen our personal statements.

“We are very grateful to Ms Allan and Dr Patel for organising this work experience, especially considering how difficult it is to find such opportunities in dentistry.”

  • Year 11 Careers Interviews

Last month, Year 11 students had the opportunity to speak individually with an independent and impartial careers adviser to discuss their education and careers pathway plans for the future. During their interview, and with the support of the adviser, students were also able to review the outcomes of their Morrisby psychometric profiling, completed earlier this year.

The feedback from students highlighted how valuable they found the interviews in shaping their ideas for the future and helping them consider their A Level choices. Above all, the interviews helped students feel more confident about their future pathways and the decisions they will be making in the months ahead.

  • 18+ Choices Day

Following their mock exams, we welcomed Year 11 students to the 18+ Choices Day – a full programme of Higher Education and Careers activities led by visiting speakers, JAGS alumnae and staff.

The day is designed to highlight the wide range of progression routes available after Sixth Form, as well as to encourage students to think about the steps they can take in the coming months to explore their future options.

  • Year 12 Careers and Higher Education Day

Year 12 students were off timetable last week for a full day of Higher Education and Careers exploration. The day began with an excellent Employability Skills talk from Johnny Rich, Higher Education and Careers Consultant and CEO and Founder of Push, a not‑for‑profit organisation that supports young people in making informed decisions about their next steps.

Students then chose from a wide range of talks and seminar sessions led by visiting speakers and JAGS staff, covering topics such as Applying for Acting and Technical Theatre, LNAT and Applying for Law, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry, Applying for Music Courses, Studying Overseas, and Applying to Oxford and Cambridge. Additional sessions focused on CV writing and Work Experience, with time built in for independent research.

In the afternoon, students attended the ever‑popular University Panel Q&A with representatives from the University of Edinburgh, Durham University, the University of Leeds, University of the Arts London and University College London.

Students shared very positive feedback about the day. Here are a few of their reflections:

Tawan (Y12): It was very useful to have a whole day dedicated to exploring and thinking about our futures.”

Sophie (Y12): “The day was very useful in helping me to understand the different opportunities open to me.”

Bethel (Y12): “I thought the Q&A session was especially useful since we were given the chance to ask questions. I got a lot of great advice about topics like work experience, attending lectures, and life at university that I took notes on and will definitely use in the future.”

  • Dulwich College Futures Convention

Sixth Form students at JAGS attended the annual Futures Convention at Dulwich College this past weekend. Students had the opportunity to take part in seminar sessions on Applying to University, Oxbridge, and Work Experience. They were also able to speak with representatives from UK universities and higher education institutions, international universities, gap year organisations, employers and more.

Aileen (Y12): “I thought the DC event was very informative, especially the stalls, as I was able to visit the universities I had in mind and get one‑to‑one information about my course and life at the university. I also went to the Oxbridge panel and the Oxford talk, and I found learning about life in one of the Oxford colleges very interesting – I would now love to go to a collegiate university! I also enjoyed hearing about students’ experiences at Oxbridge, particularly the pastoral care in relation to the workload. Thank you for this opportunity!”

Blanka (Y12): “The DC Futures Convention helped me explore universities I hadn’t considered before and broaden my options for future prospects. I was also able to ask questions one‑to‑one with people who knew a great deal about their universities and provided lots of useful resources, including mailing‑list sign‑ups and websites to look at when applying for university. There were also alumni, such as current medical students, who gave excellent advice and were happy to answer any questions I had.”

JAGS Alumnae

Meet Our Alumnae & Parents Careers Fair

We are looking forward to holding our first Meet Our Alumnae & Parents Careers Fair at JAGS on Wednesday 25 February, in collaboration with Careers and the Sixth Form. The event will be attended by all Year 10 and Year 12 pupils, who will have the opportunity to meet with over 50 JAGS alumnae and parents who are generously sharing their time and expertise. They will represent a wide range of sectors, including medicine, law, finance, marketing, arts and design, tech, engineering and entrepreneurship, to name a few, reflecting the variety of career paths JAGS students go on to pursue.

The alumnae and parent guests will offer advice, personal career stories and practical guidance, helping pupils to consider their next steps with confidence and curiosity. We are incredibly grateful to all the alumnae and parents who are taking part in the event; their involvement plays a key role in helping our students broaden their horizons and imagine what is possible.

If you would like to volunteer for future careers events at the school, please click HERE to complete our volunteer form, or contact the Development & Alumnae Relations Department at alumnae@jags.org.uk.

1741 Club Benefactors’ Reception

Head Alex Hutchinson is delighted to host our inaugural 1741 Club Benefactors’ Reception, a special evening taking place on Thursday 12 March 2026, dedicated to celebrating the generosity of the parents, alumnae and others in the JAGS community who so kindly support the JAGS Bursary Fund.

Guests will enjoy canapés and drinks in the Prissian Theatre and will have the opportunity to hear inspiring stories from alumnae about how much a life‑transforming JAGS bursary has meant to them, as well as to connect with fellow supporters who believe in the power of a JAGS education.

The 1741 Club Benefactors’ Reception is open to all who have made a regular donation to the JAGS Bursary Fund. All regular donations, no matter their size, ensure that future generations of talented JAGS students can benefit from the exceptional education we offer.
