James Allen's Bursaries
James Allen’s Bursaries
JAGS continues to have a very genuine commitment to providing support to deserving girls from less well - off families.
We aim to increase the number of awards each year. No fee income is spent on Bursaries: we finance these through the Bursary Fund, from our investment income and from charitable gifts from parents past and present, Old Girls, former and current staff and other supporters of the school.
Founded in 1741, JAGS is an academically selective, independent girls’ day school, educating some 1070 girls aged 4-18. We are distinguished by the very broad social and cultural mix of our pupils, who come from a wide range of backgrounds. Currently some 50 different languages are spoken by pupils at home. From its earliest days, JAGS has always had a large number of pupils from families who could not afford to pay fees. Currently 109 pupils aged 11-18 hold special James Allen’s Bursaries, providing up to 100% fees (means-tested according to need) with funding available for uniform, transport, school lunches and extras, including individual music tuition on any instrument. All meet here on the common ground of shared intellectual promise, and all can appreciate each other’s skills, talents and diverse cultures.
We provide a broad and exciting education. Our academic record is consistently high, and our pupils shine across a huge number of disciplines, showing excellence in many fields. Music, sports, art, drama, debating and extra-curricular activities are all thriving at JAGS. Above all, every pupil is encouraged to look outwards, to become involved in community action and to acquire the habit of giving of their time and talents to others.
In the academic year 2009-2010
• A total of more than £1.30m was used to assist 109 pupils with their fees
• 61 Girls were awarded completely free places
• 282 Senior School pupils (36.4% of the pupil population) received help with fees
