The Prep School Library provides a large, welcoming space at the heart of the school, functioning not only as a place for reading, researching and borrowing but also accommodating a whole class for teaching or special events.
We have well over 6000 books across the Prep and Pre-Prep Libraries, including classic and modern fiction, picture books, poetry, reference books and a wide range of information books selected to directly support the curriculum. We have books to help our pupils develop into informed and responsible citizens of a modern world, including inspiring biographies, and books about life in other countries, disabilities, current affairs and human rights. All girls receive a recommended reading list at the start of the academic year.
We have DVDs, audio books and subscribe to the young people’s newspaper First News, the current affairs round-up magazine The Week Junior, and National Geographic Kids. The Library often hosts special events such as author visits, poetry workshops, storytelling and streamed live events via an interactive white board.
In the Prep School there are four PCs which can be used for searching the Library catalogue catching up on projects, researching topics or using educational websites. Pupils can access the Library management system online from home or when out and about by clicking on this link or through the iMLS App, available for tablets and smartphones. Logon credentials are the same as used by the girls to access the network in school. Once logged on they can search the catalogue, check their loans, write reviews and reserve books.
Displays change regularly to inspire girls to try new authors or titles. We welcome suggestions for new books from the girls and we encourage them to recommend books to each other by writing reviews for display.
The Library is staffed by a Librarian who is always available during lunchtime Library sessions and at other times. The Librarian runs an after-school Book Club and organizes an Annual Book Week every Autumn. Each year two girls from Year 6 are selected to be pupil Librarians and are an invaluable help with checking books in and out, re-shelving, cataloguing and advising other girls on books.
