Science at the Pre-Prep and Prep school covers the three disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with a great emphasis being placed on practical investigations and experiments throughout these key areas. Girls are encouraged to work independently, as well as collaboratively, to devise their own scientific questions and carry out scientific enquiries to answer them. Creative, practical lessons with investigative work are at the core of our teaching to inspire pupils to develop their sense of curiosity and understanding of the scientific world.
In the Prep School all years are taught by a specialist Science teacher within a fully equipped Science classroom. Here the girls are able to gain plenty of hands-on experience with a range of scientific equipment for measuring and observing so that they can collect evidence and present their findings. The teaching of Science also takes place outdoors, where the school grounds provide ample opportunity for exploring the natural world in the ponds, copse and garden, as well as affording the space needed for more large scale experiments.
Each year we hold a whole school Science week, giving the girls the additional experience of visiting shows and speakers, as well as class workshops and lunchtime Science activities. Throughout the year we also support the girl’s learning of Science through educational visits and have recently visited Kew Gardens, London Zoo and the Science Museum.
