In Geography we aim to develop the children's awareness and interest in their immediate environment, the world and other people's lives.
The girls are encouraged to ask geographical questions, collect and record evidence, develop fieldwork techniques and use appropriate geographical vocabulary. As they progress through the school they develop a wide range of map skills and are encouraged to use ordnance surveys, atlases, plans and mapping software. Children have access to a well-stocked library and laptops for research.
A strong emphasis in Geography is placed on practical activities and first-hand experience. Girls conduct surveys in Dulwich Village and Dulwich Park as part of a topic on the Local Area. They record and monitor the weather using a variety of instruments and take part in river studies.
A concern for the environment is an ethos which permeates the whole of JAPS and we are proud that JAPS was recently awarded "Green Flag" status. Geography lessons reinforce the importance of caring for our environment through topics such as “The Rainforest” and "Water".
