Children are taught to develop their skills in the reading for meaning, writing of non-fiction and fiction, including poetry, prose, plays, film and drama, as well as speaking and listening. Pupils are encouraged to read widely and formulate opinions and be able to discuss various texts, themes and concepts.
Pupils at JAPS are always encouraged to read and explore a wide variety of literature. There is a highly enjoyable 'Book Week' every autumn, in both the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools. The Prep School hosts an annual 'Poetry Evening', where pupils are invited to recite published work as well as their own, unique poems. We also celebrate William Shakespeare and his works during a special ‘Shakespeare Week’ in the spring term. Coupled with these events are various author, poet and storyteller visits throughout the year. English is taught by the Class Teacher, except in Years 5 and 6, where both classes in the year group are taught by the Head of English.
JAPS pupils are encouraged to read a great deal and discuss texts with others. We believe that shared reading is a wonderful way to help pupils develop skills in comprehension, expanding vocabulary, exploring different writing styles and a love of literature. We encourage you to read with your daughter at home using our 'Poem of the Month' and ‘Words of the Month’ schemes.
