Art is taught by the class teachers throughout the Pre-Prep and the walls throughout the school are a constantly changing gallery of the children’s art works. This makes it a very colourful and stimulating environment to work in.
Art is taught both as a discrete subject in order to explore a process thoroughly, and it is also integrated into topic work. The children are encouraged to be creative and imaginative in their art projects and to be independent in their use of materials and equipment. National Curriculum and The Early Years Foundation stage objectives are followed.
In the Prep School the girls have one double lesson a week in half classes in the art room. They work through a varied programme of projects, carefully designed to ensure success and enjoyment at all levels of ability. Some of these projects respond to the moment, current events or exhibitions and some repeat from year to year. However, they all fall within a rolling annual framework which targets specific fields of Art, Craft and Design, and builds progressively upon skills and techniques. The girls also make regular use of a sketchbook to record and evaluate their own work and to appreciate and comment on the work of artists, craftspeople and designers.
We are very proud of the girls’ achievements in Art, their work is displayed all around the school and they have much success in applying for Art Scholarships and in local and national art competitions.
