The Music Scholars’ Informal Concert (20 January), Piano Festival, (10 February), Recorder Festival, (9 March), Wind, Brass and Percussion Festival (17 March), Informal School Concert (23 March)….these are just five of the celebrations JAGS Music department have held so far this term.
It is a pleasure to be part of the audience and to appreciate the opportunities the girls have. What journeys they make, becoming the most advanced players from their first, tentative lessons. Adjudicators consistently praise the technical skill and enthusiasm they see, and note the warm reception performers give each other. Last night’s Informal School Concert was a great way for Bel Canto, the Year 7 choir, to show how much they love singing together. ‘Can’t take My Eyes Off You’ on the Holst Hall stage, from memory, was brilliant! Older girls in the Chamber Orchestra had as much fun performing Britten’s ‘Playful Pizzicato’ and ‘Frolicsome Finale’. It’s not always just JAGS pupils: the Recorder Festival attracted ensembles from local primary and secondary schools. Recorder Festival photos
Beyond school, Wonderbrass played at the Royal Festival Hall on 14 March, selected as part of the 2011 Rotary Youth Makes Music Concert. Who said girls don’t play brass? Well done to everyone engaged in making-music at JAGS. It’s a great partnership between teachers and pupils.
