A double victory! Both the Intermediate and Junior cross country teams, having won the Regional championships in November, were selected to represent the South East Region at the National Finals in Rugby on 3rd and 4th December.  Many congratulations to the Intermediate team who finished in 7th position and to the Junior team who won Silver, placed 2nd in the country.

It gets better: Y8 Breagha Campbell won the Junior event and is now the Cross Country Cup National Champion! Breagha beat her arch rival, Sabrina Sinha, overtaking her on the final descent. “It felt so good running down the hill!” she said. “I wasn’t sure whether to try to pass her at the top of the hill or to wait, but I just went for it and sprinted away from her.”

The ESAA course, one lap 2450m long, is a little shorter than Breagha is used to, but “I like it,” she said. Breagha is a member of Herne Hill Harriers, like many of our budding athletes. She has group training with James McDonald and prepared by doing lots of hill sprints. She looks forward now to national Club races and the South of England Championships. “They’ll be really hard though,” she confides modestly.

Intermediate team – Georgie Hay, Fiona Basham, Vicky Picken, Hannah Webb, Emily Rees, Ellie Evans.

Junior team – Breagha Campbell, Izzy Lamport Went, Freya McCoy, Catriona McSorley, Isabella Barber, Tatiana Foggitt.
