17 year Katie Snowden runs like the wind and now has a Commonwealth Youth Games Gold medal to prove it, beating girls from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas and Uganda. Not that the win came without drama – Katie crossed the finishing line in the 800m finals so close to another girl that a photo finish put 1/100th second between them. But on appeal by the England managers the Ugandan girl was disqualified for barging in the last 100m.

Did I mention the tonsillitis? Katie missed the final 3 days of preparation on the Isle of Man, lying ill in her bed and unable to take the normal painkillers. She had to face a drugs test immediately after her win, but the team doctor had prescribed carefully.

Still, all’s well that ends well. Katie had her medal re-presented by Mrs Gibbs in today’s assembly; greeted by the biggest cheers she’s sporting her biggest smile, and why not!
