Congratulations to Man Sze Yeung, Year 13, pictured here, for reaching the finals of the national Young Designers Competition, hosted by JAGS on Friday 22 June, with her impressive space-saving, office bicycle rack, made from metal but inspired by bamboo. Selected from over 500 young people, she presented her ideas with 15 other young , creative designers in front of a distinguished professional panel and to parents and teachers from the finalists’ schools.

The technical skills shown in making her floor to ceiling stand were remarkable. She was in good company with her innovative idea – the young designers’ work on display included an electronic travel guide, a multi-purpose study unit and a modern military jacket; however, the judge’s choice for joint first place and Brunel University’s £1000 prize was a motorcycle paddock stand designed by Oliver Douglass (Barton Peveril College, Eastleigh,Hampshire) and a wireless multimedia dock  designed by Jack Kemp (Barclay School, Stevenage, Herts), a brilliantly simple device that could be on the shelves soon.  Indeed the judges were very taken with how many of the ideas were marketable. Well done to all 16 finalists. They have great potential in the design world. Man Sze will be pursuing her enthusiastic, innovative approach to design and technology at university.

It’s 25 years since JAGS opened its Design and Technology department; we have much to celebrate.
