Day 1 The Somme

Day 2 Diksmuide: Trench of Death

Day 3 Arras

Such a simple sounding schedule, such a profoundly moving three days. Year 9’s visit to the Battlefields in France and Belgium on 18-21 April opened their eyes to the tremendous challenges faced by soldiers doing their duty in the 1st World War. Serving in the trench at Diksmuide was seen as a sentence of death; walking through it was a sobering experience for the girls. But there were moments when they were quietly uplifted. The memorial at Thiepval and the headstones in beautifully kept cemeteries told personal stories of courage rewarded, (sometimes also of cowardice punished); the nameless stones showed respect for those missing soldiers. For Izzy Broughton and a few friends, there was a special chance to visit the grave of her great-great-great uncle, Captain Henry S. Feilding, at Dozinghem Military Cemetery near Ypres.
