There was a lot of excited splashing in the K2 Leisure Centre at Crawley on Saturday 15 May at the National Finals of the IAPS Swimming Championships after the JAPS Y5 and 6 teams produced a whole crop of top results and personal bests.

The Campbell family had much to celebrate: Year 6 Breagha had an outstanding start, pushing hard off the wall, leading from the start and going into the turn in 1st place. It came down to tenths of a second, as these races do, and in the end Breagha achieved 2nd place in the 50m and her personal best of 30.33 seconds. Who could ask for anything more?

Where does the talent come from, I wanted to know? Clearly her mum is an inspiration as a former county swimmer. Breagha starts training with a club (Leander) for the first time this afternoon. At the moment her passion is swimming first and netball second, though Breagha has also proved to be a strong runner and in the biathlon. She also loves after school ballet classes with Miss Angelina, to give her core strength. Better get dancing then in time for the English Schools’ Competition in June, where she’ll swim in the Individual Medley. Well done Breagha!

Many congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 relay teams for these excellent results:

The Y6 relay teams swam first and produced season best times in both the Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay. Rosa Collier, Jessica Mascarenhas, Sophie Lewis-Ward and Breagha Campbell finished 8th out of 16 teams in the Medley. In the Freestyle, Megan Mirchandani swam in place of Jessica Mascarenhas and helped the team to finish 6th out of 16. These are incredible results and bodes well for the National Finals of the Schools’ Relays in June.

In the second session, Lily Freeman swam in the Y5 25m Freestyle. Having qualified 16th after the regionals, Lily managed to move up two places, finishing 14th in the country. In the Y6’s individual events Sophie Lewis-Ward swam in the 25m Butterfly and whilst almost producing a season’s best time, finished 11th in the country. Rosa Collier swam in the Y6 50m Backstroke and was seeded 17th. Rosa beat her personal best time by two seconds and finished 11th in the country. In the Y6 50m Freestyle Breagha Campbell produced a personal best time and qualified for the final in 2nd place. She went on to finish 2nd in the country in a personal best time of 30.33 seconds.
