Spring
There are many ways in which to make a message heard and the JAGS Eco group: Year 10s Louise Hufton, Rebecca Howard, Banuta Kalns-Timans and Year 13 Hannah Thornton found something new to capture our attention. Today’s assembly resembled a Just a Minute competition with willing audience participants Isobel Fenlon, India Marlow- Prince, Jane Simpkiss and Aistvinie Uthayarasa thinking rapidly on their feet, speaking without hesitating, deviating or repeating themselves on ‘The Effects of Global Warming’ and Saving the World’. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but they got into their stride and their bravery was commended with cookies.
Everyone will remember this assembly. The serious points came through as the Eco group urged us to do what we can to reduce carbon emissions at home at school, in Southwark, in London….and so on. Inspired by a talk they’d heard from environmental campaigner Dr Ian Roberts, they explained the impact on the environment of car usage, food production and the destruction of the rain forests.
Dr Roberts told them, ‘Although it is vital to understand why the world is as it is, the motivation to build abetter world, one in which we tread lightly on our delicate planet, is fuelled by imagination and hope.’
The last words are from the girls themselves: ‘We meet every Tuesday lunchtime in S2…If you are a good person, then you will come.’
Lots of laughter, but I bet there’ll be more people there next week.
