Science Week assembly moved to a whole new level when Mr Putley chose to cook an egg for breakfast in front of the entire school! But it was perfect demonstration of how we can misinterpret what we see before us, be misled. We must consider how scientists should behave. ‘Scientists,’ he told us, ‘shouldn’t EGGSaggerate, or over-EGG the evidence to make a point.’ 3 enthusiastic volunteers came onto the stage to time the boiling of the perfect egg. Which it clearly wasn’t, when it emerged raw….. But then, we’d all assumed the liquid it was boiling in was water, whereas it was actually another clear liquid with a much lower boiling point! ‘Don’t be misled,’ he reminded us!

We will ponder that thought until Science Week sizzles into being on Monday 8 November with lively activities for all age groups – Year 7 will handle astonishing insects when the Bug Man calls; Francisco Diego, Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University College London, will ponder rainbows with Year 11; Year 10 explore qualities of air in the Air Show when the wonderful Gareth and John return, and Years 7 and 8 get stuck into Messy Chemistry experiments with JAGS teachers. Year 8 will find out about writing science-fiction when popular children’s author John Brindley visits, and there is a joint Geography/Biology department trip for Year 9 to the National History Museum.
