Autumn
‘Lest We Forget’
Congratulations to Rosy Murch and Grace Brown, Y12, whose tireless efforts in producing ‘Lest We Forget’ on 19 November prompted us to reflect - and to look forward, to celebrate the excellent work being done by the charities represented at the event, Help for Heroes, Scottish R’n’R and the Mark Evison Foundation. It was poignant to hear younger JAPS girls speak the words of soldiers in Afghanistan, and to listen to performances of music by composers ranging from Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Leona Lewis to Bach, Mendelssohn, Hasselmanns, Granados and Monti.
Emma Simmons’ striking rendition of ‘When the Boys Come Home’ evoked images of the 1st World War, but the reality of living with war today was sharply in focus when Colonel Stuart Tootal spoke movingly about being a soldier in Afghanistan. Rosy and Grace want us to recognise the impact on the families at home. For every soldier killed there, at least 3 others will be seriously injured. We don’t hear about those. Our wounded heroes are finding the support of places such as Headley Court inspirational. It was humbling to listen to the tributes paid by Cavalry Officer, Captain Andrew Jelinek, seriously wounded in January, who has surpassed doctors’ expectations by learning to ride again.
Ticket and raffle sales raised an impressive £2000 for the charities. Thank you too, Jennefer Tobin and Mrs Evison, for invaluable contributions to the evening. We left, spirits lifted, with the Gospel Choir’s ‘O Happy Day’ ringing in our ears.
