Computer users are familiar with the fonts Times New Roman, Arial and Gill Sans, and, given time, you might be selecting Chilvers! Well done to Rebecca Chilvers, Y10, whose attractive design work has been selected by the Royal Geographical Society for use on its ‘Join Us’ flyers, sent to every member. Rebecca came up with the design and included it in her working notebook as her ‘First Job’, where her art teacher spotted it. There could be something in her genes – Rebecca’s father is a graphic designer at RGS, and she’s attended lectures with him on typography. Rebecca shares his enthusiasm for designing letters. ‘There’s someone who’s spent 10 years designing fonts for cartoons!’

What’s next? Rebecca’s trying her hand at designing images to go into a new coffee shop at King’s College Hospital. Rebecca said, ‘They’re calling it KEATS – a play on King’s and ‘eat’ - and I’m going to try to find suitable images from Keats’ poems that I can write in my own new font that will be etched in the glass windows of the new space.’ Rebecca’s dad has the commission, but they’re both having a go. It will be interesting to see what happens!
