On Tuesday 9 June some of the Y5 girls went to the AEGON Tennis Championships at Queen’s Club.  After a grey, rainy start, the weathered brightened up and we were in for an exciting afternoon of tennis.  The girls were very excited about seeing some of the top names in tennis play on centre court, including Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick and Britain’s number one, Andy Murray.  They were almost as excited about buying an over-sized tennis ball for the players to autograph!  Some girls were lucky enough to be at the entrance just at the right time, when the players arrived and had the chance to say hello and ask for an autograph. Bridie Shine was even given a tennis ball by Lleyton Hewitt out of his match bag and of course he signed it too.  The first match got off to a good start and Ferrero took an early lead over Grosjean.  Unfortunately Grosjean was forced to retire due to injury.  Andy Roddick won the second match without too much difficulty, producing some serves in the region of 136mph!  Girls and teachers also had the opportunity to watch players playing on the warm up area too.  Ms Johnson and Mrs Woodward were very lucky to come face to face with Andy Murray, just as he left the practice courts.  They took the opportunity to get a quick photo but unfortunately could not get the words out to wish him luck!  All in all we had a wonderful afternoon of tennis, avoiding the rain and tube strike.  Thank you to Mr Lochran, Miss Piachaud and Ms Johnson for their help.
