On 19th June 2009, Ming Jin Chen was presented £20 prize money for being a finalist in the Young Designers Competition. Ming Jin was one of very few GCSE candidates entering their work and it was a nerve wracking few moments when she first entered the hall at Dulwich College to put up her work observing some extremely high standard A level work. There were about thirty entries in total from all over the United Kingdom. Ming Jin’s product was designed to aid sufferers of night vision. There were eight high profile judges from design courses such as Brunel and Ravensbourne and other professionals involved in the design industry. Ming Jin was interviewed by them all and had to explain the purpose of her product and the industrial and commercial and marketing strategies she would use to market it. It was a very nice day; we had a good lunch and a chance to talk to other budding designers and the judges finally announced the prize-winners after what seemed a very long and debate. The first prize of £500 went to a girl from The Stephen Perse Sixth Form College in Cambridge for a wonderful articulated ply sledge. Well done Ming Jin.
