Weekend news from JAGS

The winners of the Juvenes Translatores contest 2008 have now been published on the website:http://ec.europa.eu/translatores

Congratulations to Poppy Simon for her translation (French to English) in the Juvenes Translatores contest. Her translation was among the best 10% of all contestants around Europe with a total of 2000 translations!!! There could, of course, only be one winner per Member State. But the organisers say that other participants showed remarkable linguistic skills and they think everyone should know that. Considering that this is the first time that JAGS has participated in such event, we are very happy about Poppy’s achievement! Roll on next year’s opportunity to enter Juvenes Translatores.

And what of the New Year? In assembly Rev. Dianna Gwilliams persuaded us to take a more circumspect view on our resolutions, broken or not; in any case we had another chance to re-visit them with the Spanish department who organised Las Campanadas, the New Year’s Eve tradition of eating twelve grapes, one to bring good luck for each of the following months. All good fun in aid of Project Peru, a charity with which we are linked through former Head of Spanish Maria Moore.

Mention bananas to sixth former Maggie Lund and you should get a smile. Maggie was one of those featured on Sunday’s edition of the BBC1 Antiques Roadshow when the team visited Dulwich Picture Gallery. The specialist was clearly delighted with the intricate detail of the beautiful little porcelain banana. You might have also have spotted teacher Mrs Debbie Lewis and sixth former Harriet Godwin, taking a keen interest in the discussion. There was apparently such a treasure trove that next week’s edition of the Roadshow on Sunday 15 February, also comes from Dulwich Picture Gallery.
