So how is art relevant today?
What does it mean to you?
Have you visited Dulwich Picture Gallery?
What would it take for you to visit DPG?
These are some of the questions posed by Emily Shackleton, Zara Mannings and Thuy-Ni Van in Dulwich yesterday, in a taster film-making opportunity offered by the online magazine TrueTube.
The Flip Project aims to support young people aged between 16-25 in developing a one minute promo film highlighting a positive aspect of their community. So Emily, Zara and Thuy-Ni found themselves in Dulwich Picture Gallery for an hour’s workshop thrashing out what messages they wanted to send and how best to present them in their film, to engage with others of all ages in the community – and beyond; the audience is boundless.

One minute may not sound very long but it’s amazing both what you can achieve in the time and how much effort it takes to perfect it. So many decisions: Music or no music? What is the opening shot? To camera or voice-over? How does it end? It was a case of training on the hoof: after panning through the gallery with a nifty little camera, they set off in hot pursuit of the youth of Dulwich, ready with their questions. Zara and co were very persuasive in getting people to talk, and they quickly found the variety of answers they needed. |

Now it’s over to the professionals. The edited version of their film will be shown along with others made (27 and rising) at TrueTube’s final event at the British Film Institute on 28 November. Well done to them all, and thanks to Danya from True Tube and to Ingrid Beazley, e-learning project developer at Dulwich Picture Gallery, for making it all happen.
