Autumn
Read these two statements:
Hari Conner, Year 13 at JAGS, studying Physics, Mathematics, Art and Japanese at A level.
Hari Conner, international artist and cartoonist.
Both true! Harriet Conner (www.girlinstripysocks.co.uk) has an exhibition currently in California; next stop Portland; who knows where else?
This may be an example of how things just take off if you have the confidence to follow your dream. Inspired by celebrated American artist Phil Dynan, Hari sent him some of her cartoon work and asked for advice. The rest as they say is history: a breath-taking sponsorship offer to finance an exhibition of her work as one of his ‘emerging artists’, and to help her gain wider recognition by setting up her own website. You can see more if you visit www.redbluffartgallery.com
At JAGS Hari is enthusiastic about developing her skills in fine art; at home she has been developing illustration and cartoon techniques for years, writing and illustrating her stories, which she says are usually more fantasy than real in style. Since 1980s there has been a big revival in graphic novels (long comics). If you want to read her first novel about Micah, a very ‘real’ boy character, not a superhero, you won’t have long to wait. Hari is currently in discussion with an online publisher. Details will (eventually) be on her website. Good initiative, Hari! Good luck for the future – Physics at university and then who knows?
