Theory - Pupils cover a graded Associated Board syllabus and take an external exam in    June.  Theory is valuable for musicians of grade 3+ instrumental standard as it broadens musical awareness and supports instrumental work.  For children destined to take practical exams beyond Grade 5 these course provide a thorough and steady progression through academic work in a relaxed group environment.  Jasspa currently runs courses at the following levels: Grades 2,3 and 5. Pupils should apply for a class 1-2 grades lower than their current practical level.  A small amount of homework is given and a mock exam in the summer term determines each whether pupils are ready to take their exam.

Junior Choir -  A great option for under 12s!  Develop a good musical ear, have fun with your voice and tackle a technically and musically challenging repertoire.  This class covers a variety of musical styles from classical repertoire to show numbers. Junior Choir performs twice during the year and boys and girls are welcome.

Big Band - For technically competent wind, brass and percussion instrumentalists of Grade 2-6 standard.  Repertoire is broad, from Concert Band numbers to Jazz standards.  No previous ensemble experience is required. Specialist tutors Vicky Cowles, Colin Rae and Martin Allen lead sectional rehearsals and full band rehearsals.  Big Band performs twice each year.

Jazz Band - By invitation and for technically advanced wind, brass, piano and percussion instrumentalists of Grade 6+ standard. Repertoire is jazz based and includes improvisation. This band is directed by Jim Howard and will occasionally  join forces with the Big Band.

JASSPA offers free aural lessons for pupils taking music exams. These classes give extra help for the sometimes daunting aural sections of exams.  Pupils sign up on a termly basis.  Timetables are available at the start of term.
