Instrumental tuition is an option for pupils aged 6-17 (year 2—13) and parents. One-to-one specialist tuition in the following; violin, ‘cello, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, piano, percussion, drum kit, brass instruments and singing. When embarking on instrumental tuition pupils and parents need to commit to regular lesson attendance, the hire/purchase of a reasonable quality instrument and almost daily practice. Learning a musical instrument is an extremely rewarding experience, especially when progress is achieved at a good pace. With good support and reasonable interest levels most pupils will make satisfying progress.
Children starting an instrument other than piano should aim for joining a beginners’ ensemble at their weekday school within a year. JASSPA’s Big Band and Jazz Band are available for wind, brass and percussion players of Grade 2+ standard. For pupils keen on performing there are also instrumental concerts, Open Days and external exam sessions.
All instrumental pupils aged 6-11 (except guitarists and percussionists) are supplied with a practice notebook called JOT-A-NOTE. This book organises communication between pupils, parents and teachers and cost £4.00 annually. JOT-A-NOTES should be checked weekly by parents and pupils at home.
Parents must attend the first lesson of all young /beginner pupils to meet the teacher and receive advice before purchasing an instrument. This applies especially to string and wind players, where instruments come in different sizes. In some instances teachers may suggest parents attending for a few weeks in order to help establish a good practice routine/aid setting up of instrument. If you need instrumental advice please make a note on your application form as Jasspa can advise on suppliers.
Withdrawal from instrumental lessons requires a full term’s notice in writing . However all instrumental beginners are encouraged to complete a year’s worth of lessons in order to fairly assess interest levels / potential.
