Teaching & Learning

Our curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences (including trips and visits) that we plan for our pupils. It aims to provide opportunities for all our pupils to learn and to achieve and is firmly rooted in the values of our school as described in our Aims. We seek to promote our pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. We are a selective school but aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all our pupils. In planning and teaching our curriculum, we seek to set suitable learning challenges, to respond to pupils' diverse learning needs, and to overcome potential barriers to learning. Throughout the school, pupils' work and achievements are regularly monitored and assessed, and suitable provision is made for those who need additional help.

The JAPS curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated in line with the evolving needs of our pupils and good educational practice.

KS1

KS1 covers year 1 and 2 at the Pre-Prep.  Teaching follows the guidelines set out in the National Curriculum and is designed to accommodate all learning styles.  At all times it is the school's aims to build upon the previous success of pupils and to engage them fully in their learning.

In the Pre-Prep School, boys and girls are taught the National Curriculum subjects in classes of 18, with specialist teaching in French, ICT, PE and Music. Reception class activities for our youngest children are based on the Early Years' Foundation Stage Framework and teaching in Year 1 and Year 2 is guided by the content of the National Curriculum.  All other subjects are taught by the Class Teacher.

In the Middle School (girls 7-11), much importance is placed on consolidating the basic skills, as well as giving pupils the benefit of being taught by specialist teachers. Pupils are in classes of 24 but have many lessons in half-classes. Pupils are still taught regularly by the Class Teacher, who has overall responsibility for each child's pastoral care.

Although we are not bound by the strictures of the National Curriculum, we teach all the subjects it requires but seek to go beyond its confines in many areas. Our pupils do all the Key Stage One and Key Stage Two National Curriculum external tests (audited by Edexcel) and achieve outstanding results. We adapt the requirements of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies as best suit the needs of our pupils.

Early Years Learning

Our Reception Year takes carefully into account the national requirements which set out what children are expected to achieve by the end of the Foundation Stage. These are organised as six areas of learning:

  1. Personal, social and emotional development
  2. Communication, Language and literacy
  3. Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (Mathematical Development)
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the world
  5. Physical development
  6. Creative development

We cover these through our main curriculum subjects.
At Key Stage One many of the subjects are taught as part of topics such as "People Who Help Us", "Animals" or "Space".

Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across the Curriculum

Pupils are given opportunities to develop their ICT capability by using ICT tools to support their learning across the curriculum

Health and Safety

Especially in Design and Technology, ICT, Art, Craft and Design and Physical Education (when working with tools, equipment and materials, in practical activities and in different environments), pupils are taught:

  • about hazards, risks and risk control;
  • to recognise hazards, assess consequent risks and take steps to control the risks to themselves and others;
  • to use information to assess the immediate and cumulative risks;
  • to manage their environment to ensure the health and safety of themselves and others;
  •  to explain the steps they take to control risks.
