World Book Day - Thursday 6 March 2008

The whole of the Pre-Prep participated in 'The Big Read' when the children visited different classes to share their favourite books. Also, there was a lovely display of photographs in the school of the children reading with a family member, pet or favourite toy at home. A great deal of enjoyment was had by all and a love of books was evident.

All the children said their words brilliantly, sang the songs beautifully and looked fantastic in their costumes and make-up.

Maths Week at the Pre-Prep: Monday 4 – Friday 8 February

The last week of term for pre-prep at JAPS has been Maths Week. There was a terrific range of Maths activities going on around the school during the week and a variety of brain teasers for the children to solve on the lobby notice board.

The children really enjoyed Mrs Cheater’s Maths challenges and Mrs Saunders’ pancake challenge.  They were wonderfully ingenious in choosing their selection of objects to fit into a matchbox in ‘The Matchbox Challenge’, ‘Maths in a Suitcase’ was hugely popular and fun and ‘The Maths Hat Parade’ gave the children an opportunity to display their tremendous creativity.

Thank you to everyone who helped the children prepare for the week.   Each child received a certificate for participating in the Maths Hat Parade and one child in each class received a calculator for winning the Matchbox Challenge.  Many congratulations to the children for taking part with such enthusiasm and interest.

Y4 British Museum outing

Year 4 recently spent the day at the British Museum.  They went specifically to see the Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo treasure, and the Roman Mildenhall treasure. They all loved the Sutton Hoo helmet, which is perhaps the most famous Anglo-Saxon find! They were also fascinated with some of the wonderfully ornate objects such as the purse, brooches and belt buckles, made out of gold, silver and red garnets.

The girls heard the story of the discovery of the Mildenhall Treasures, which was found by a farmer in his field when ploughing. The girls were able to relate the story to the objects in the display cabinets. These are some of the most amazing Roman silver items ever found. Next they had a small treasure hunt to find various Roman artefacts such as a mosaic and writing tablets. They were given the opportunity to handle some artefacts, a copy of a plate from Mildenhall and a real Roman statuette which was 200 years old. They  also had a chance to hold one of the Mildenhall plates ....amazing to think that it was almost 2000 years old!  Much to the girls' delight, they then detoured to see Pete Bog, the rather leathery looking Lindow Man found in a peat bog! Finally, they saw the famous Lewis Chessmen, the inspiration behind the wizard chess pieces in the Harry Potter film.

It was a fantastic day - the girls learnt a great deal and it was wonderful to see and handle all the objects that we have talked about in class.  The girls were extremely well-behaved and a credit to JAPS. One museum guide commented on how good they were. Thank you, girls!

Y2 Theatre Visit – Friday 1 February 2008

Y2 spent a thoroughly enjoyable morning at the Greenwich Theatre where they watched a performance of 'On the Trail of The Countback Kid'.  The show was designed to challenge their Maths abilities to the limit.  They used bonds to 100, their times tables and rounding.  They were also introduced to decimals!

Unicef's 'Day for Change'

This Friday 1st February is Unicef’s 'Day for Change': one chosen day in the year for schools around the country to concentrate on fundraising and education.

The focus for 2008 is Water Sanitation and, specifically, for The Gambia in Africa. JAPS is going to be taking part by allowing girls to pay £1 to wear their own clothes (in the colour of The Gambian flag) to school on that day. 3T will be holding their Class Assembly in the morning, giving us some more information about the Day for Change. The School Council will also be running a quiz about The Gambia which girls can pay 50p to enter. All correct entrance sheets will be raffled and prizes handed out in an Assembly the following week.

Y1 History Workshop - 'Victorian School Life', Wednesday 23rd January 2008

The children in Year One looked fantastic in their Victorian costumes on Wednesday when The Freshwater Theatre Company paid them another visit.  They experienced a Victorian lesson taught by Miss Wilberforce, whom they referred to as Ma’am.  The children commented on how strict she was and that they had to sit up straight with their arms folded on the desk and were only allowed to speak when spoken to.  Miss Wilberforce said, “Children should be seen and not heard.”  It was all huge fun.

Y1 History Workshop - 'Victorian Home Life', Tuesday 15th January 2008

The children in Year One looked fantastic in their very creative Victorian costumes on Tuesday when the Freshwater Theatre Company did a workshop on 'Victorian Home Life', as part of this half term's History topic. They had a wonderful time learning about the home life of a Victorian child; lots of polishing, washing, carpet beating and playing with replica Victorian toys was enjoyed by all.
