La movida madrileña, January 2010

(Gayle Griffiths puts the Year 13 Spanish group’s performance for ‘Genesis’, the 2010 multicultural evening, firmly in

context)

After the death of F. Franco in 1975 and after 40 years of an oppressive military dictatorship, Spain began a journey towards democracy and liberty. Since censorship has been relaxed, groups of intellectual and artists could pursue new forms of expressions. Madrid and "la movida madrileña" led the process of radical cultural change which characterized by freedom of expression and transgression of the taboos imposed by the Franco regime. Artist such as Pedro Almodóvar and Alaska were prominent in the movement and Alaska’s song " ¿A quién le importa?" (Who cares?) became an anthem for young Spanish people.
