Burnt By The Sun By Peter Flannery
From The Screenplay By Nikita Milhalkov And Rustam Ibragimbekor

On 27 February, the Russian Department, organised a trip to see the renowned play Burnt by the Sun, that had been adapted from a film.  As always, we were excited to have another Russian trip to the theatre, as they have always been a success.  Burnt by the Sun is about a Russian general, who became a Soviet hero under Lenin, and his family in the country dacha, to us a summer house.  The play starts with a holiday approaching and everyone’s excited, but in comes the General’s wife’s ex-lover.  He’s unaware of this old love affair but we soon find out a dark secret about the past, and the future.  The play shocked us all, with gunshots and the reality of living under Stalin.  It was a brilliant play, and I was shown a bit of true Russian History that I wouldn’t have known without seeing the play.  Everyone had a good night out, and we all hope more Russian plays come along so that there’s an excuse for another fun and educating trip.
