Community Links

The department has extensive links with the local community in a variety of different activities.

The Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) is offered to Year 12 as part of their PE options programme. This enables them to gain a nationally recognized award which may allow them to assist in youth clubs and other such organizations. Part of their course involves them spending time in our local primary schools teaching the young pupils sport and games. The course also requires the pupils to organize competitions and throughout the year local primary and secondary schools are invited to JAGS to compete in a variety of sporting activities. The pupils are responsible for all the organization and the running of the competitions on the day of the event. They are also required to officiate at a sporting event and at various times of the year they assist in running school swimming galas. The National Pool Lifeguard course is also offered to the Sixth form and as an accredited award it allows them to lifeguard in swimming pools. Both these awards are of benefit to our JAGS sports club as the girls are often involved in lifeguarding and assisting with the holiday sports camps.

The PE department has close links with the Southwark Sports Development Team and has a ‘Sporting Partnership’ with them. The partnership is advantageous to both the school and Southwark sport. The CSLA pupils assist with organizing some of their events e.g. primary swimming galas and the disabled youth games. The Southwark team value highly the contribution our pupils make to their sports teams for the London Heathrow Games and they make an annual visit in the spring term prior to the games to recruit for their teams.

The local community provides a wide range of natural and man - made sporting opportunities. The Year 7 and 10 experience outdoor education in activities such as orienteering, climbing, abseiling, problem solving etc. The Year 11 and 12 PE options programme includes; sailing at Surrey Quays, skiing and golf in Sidcup and ice skating at Streatham. It is anticipated that we will include rowing in the summer of 2006. As part of the programme we also invite in from the community qualified coaches in the following areas: yoga, kickboxing, pilates, fencing and tai chi to give as much variety as possible.

Our extensive fixture programme allows the pupils to compete against a variety of different schools in matches and tournaments.

This year we have linked with Bacons College to form a sporting partnership with a view to sharing ideas on the development of school sport. One of the areas we are developing is the government initative of PESSCL (Physical Education, School Sport and Clubs). We have also shared CPD and a member of their staff annually moderates our CSLA award.
