Music

JAGS has a thriving music department which puts on over 30 concerts and events every year. There is a long history of music making at the school: the first teacher was Ralph Vaughan Williams who was succeeded by Gustav Holst who stayed at the school for 16 years. Music is a part of everyday life at JAGS with over half the girls learning an instrument or singing and ensembles for all ages and abilities including four orchestras, six choirs, jazz, pop, wind and brass ensembles, recorder consort and more. Academic music is also very strong with large numbers taking A Level and GCSE.

Music Scholarships and Awards

Scholarships and exhibitions are available for 11+ and 16+ entry. Candidates for 11+ should be of at least Grade 5 standard and those for 16+ entry should be of Grade 8 standard. Deadline for applications in December with auditions in late January and early February. The Director of Music is happy to discuss and advise parents about scholarships. For further information contact the Registrar.

The scholars and exhibitioners are a valued and important part of music making at JAGS. They are given performing opportunities, and in Year 13 the chance to perform a solo with orchestra. Scholars are expected to take a full and active role in all appropriate events and attendance at rehearsals is compulsory. Scholars and exhibitioners are expected to lead by example. Although it is not essential to study music at A Level it is expected that GCSE music will be studied in school in Years 10 and 11.
