The Mathematics Department are a team of enthusiastic specialists who believe mathematics is not only a beautiful and exciting subject in its own right but also one that underpins many other branches of learning. Hence our aim is to help our pupils develop enjoyment, confidence, understanding and a broad range of mathematical skills.

The popularity of the subject at JAGS is clearly reflected in the large number of girls who choose to continue studying it into Years 12 and 13, with some girls opting for Further Mathematics as a fourth or fifth subject. The department has a long record of very high achievement in public examinations. JAGS pupils regularly achieve excellent results in the National Mathematics Competitions and our Hans Woyda Quiz team is never considered an ‘easy’ match by other schools.

In the last fifty years, old and new applications of mathematical ideas have transformed the way we live, from CD’s to the whispering jet engine so we are well aware of the importance of practical applications in the subject and the need to encourage students to think clearly for themselves.
