Juvenes Translators 2008

On 6 November 2008 76 students studying French, Spanish, Italian, Russian or German in the Sixth Form took part in the first round of the European Union translation contest Juvenes translators 2008. Students were allowed to consult dictionaries to translate texts from the foreign languages into English. As we were looking for only four finalists born in 1991 for Italian, German, Spanish and French  to represent the school in the competition we decided to extend prizes to all languages in a simultaneous in-house contest.

Congratulations to our winners:

German: Hussun-Ara Shah, Leila Morris
French: Eleanor Hambler, Eliza Chubb
Italian: Ayesha Williams, Zofia Bokowska
Japanese: Shivangee Agraval
Russian: Maggie Lund, Hannah Cannell
Spanish: Rosie Joly, Phoebe Newman

On 27 November our glorious finalists (Leila Morris for German, Anita Keesie for Spanish, Madeleine Owen-Smith for Italian, Poppy Simon for French) brooded over four tricky texts in the final of the translation contest. At the same time several hundred students all over Europe joined them in this challenging task. Their efforts have been submitted to the organisers of this interesting competition and all we can do now is to wait and keep our fingers crossed.
