Sharing Japanese

Every Thursday lunch-time at my school, I help Mr Okura to teach Japanese at “Year 9 GCSE Japanese Taster Class”. I have always talked to my Japanese mother in Japanese since I was very young, and learned the language naturally. I have also been going to a “Saturday Japanese School” every week from Year 1, where I have learnt to write and read properly. When I visit my grandparents in Japan every year, it is great to be able to talk to them and enjoy TV and all the great culture there. It is also nice that I can help people with my translation skills.

Some of my friends at school have become very interested in Japan through reading comics, computer games or food; therefore they are keen to learn Japanese. It is my great pleasure to teach my friends about the language and the culture. I have found many similarities and differences between Japanese and English by teaching. I love sharing my heritage and it is such a joy to see my friends learning and having fun. To see them speaking Japanese can be rather funny and also very rewarding. I hope I can keep helping Mr Okura to teach Japanese and encourage others to take up this great language.

日本語を分かち合う　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　山下　葵

毎週木曜日の学校の昼休みに、私は大倉先生のYear 9 GCSE Japanese Taster Classのお手伝いをしています。私は小さい頃から日本人の母とは日本語で会話をしてきたので、日本語は自然に覚えました。小学生になってからは、毎週土曜日に「日本語補習校」に通って、読み書きの勉強を続けています。毎年、日本に住む祖父母に会いに行きますが、その時、日本語で普通に会話をしたり、テレビを見たり、日本の文化をエンジョイできることは、とてもありがたいことに感じます。また、英語と日本語の通訳ができるとことで、人を助けられることをいつもうれしく思います。

今の学校の友達の中には、マンガやコンピュータゲーム、食べ物などを通して日本に興味を持ち、日本語を学びたいと思っている人が何人もいます。そんな友達に先生と一緒に日本の言葉や文化を教えることができるのは、大きな喜びです。また、教えることを通して、英国語と日本語の共通点や違いなど、私にとっても新しい発見がありました。友達と日本のことについて分かち合えること、みんなが楽しんで学んでいることを、いつもうれしく思います。友達が実際に日本語で話している様子はちょっと面白く、また、やりがいを感じます。これからも大倉先生と一緒に日本語を教え、より多くの人にこのすばらしい言葉を習ってもらえるように、がんばりたいと思います。
