Chemistry
Chemistry is a thriving subject in the curriculum with many students choosing this challenging and rewarding subject at A level. Currently Edexcel courses are followed throughout from GCSE to AS and A2 but an AQA GCSE course will be followed from September 2006 in response to National Curriculum changes.
The department aims to:
- foster an enjoyment of the subject
- make pupils aware of the role of Chemistry and its applications in the environment, industry and in everyday life.
The development of laboratory skills is very important, with experimental work being integral to the learning process and carried out, on a regular basis, in one of four well-designed specialist laboratories. Although we make use of IT resources this does not exclude hands on experimental work.
These aims are similarly encompassed at advanced level where they are extended to include a deeper appreciation of the patterns and principles governing the chemical world. Communication skills are regarded as essential, with Year 12 pupils normally giving a short talk on a chemical topic and senior girls attending outside chemistry lectures.
Not only is A level Chemistry a requirement for biochemistry, pharmacy, medical careers and many biological sciences, but Chemistry also enhances the ability to think logically and analytically, so making chemistry graduates suitable for many different careers.
