Biology
Biology lessons at JAGS are lively and fun!
Girls study Biology as a separate science from Year 7 and it is a popular ‘A’ level choice. From the word go, girls do lots of practicals and are encouraged to ask questions, not just to answer them! Facilities are excellent and teachers use presentations and computers as well as traditional models to help illustrate ideas. The botany gardens provide an unusual teaching resource and are an ideal area for teaching practical ecology. In the sixth form, girls are lucky to study ecology at the UK’s leading field centre and visit the bird colonies on the stunning Skomer Island nature reserve. The department organises a number of events throughout the year and these have included a Bird of Prey demonstration, a Bug demonstration, a Forensic Science day and trips to the Natural History Museum and London Zoo.
The curriculum is broad and covers many aspects of human physiology, health and disease and biotechnology. In class, girls enjoy discussing topics ranging from the exciting advances that have been made in Biology to topical issues that have attracted media attention recently.
Year 7 and 8 Biology club members help to look after the department’s aquarium, name the fish and learn about the school’s historic Botany Gardens.
