The Dining Hall and mezzanine started life as a swimming pool in the summer of 1939. It was due to be opened by H.R.H. Queen Mary on 3rd October 1939, but events intervened and the outbreak of World War II meant that the opening ceremony was cancelled. However, the pool was used from the start and right through the war years. In the winter months it was floored and used as a theatre. Work to convert the old swimming pool and the changing room areas began in the summer of 2007; by January 2009 the building was ready and the Dining Hall, both lower and upper levels, and the Deep End Cafe opened for business.
