PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH & CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION (PSHCE) AT JAGS (Senior School)

The curriculum at JAGS has been carefully analysed to ensure that the PSHCE topics identified within the National Curriculum are covered.

For all year groups we have visits from outside specialist speakers and use a range of other resources.  PSHCE topics may also be covered in a variety of lessons.  We also organise occasional Parent Seminars on topics such as Internet Safety and Adolescent Issues.

In Year 7 girls undertake a short course on Citizenship and follow a PSHCE programme during Form Time. In Years 8 and 9 the PSHCE programme continues in Form Time. Many topics will also be covered through Science specifications. There are additional visits from outside speakers in Years 7 – 9.

The Topics covered in Years 7-9 include:

General Well Being and Coping with Changes; Rights and Responsibilities; Personal Safety; Internet Safety; Bullying; Smoking; Heart Disease; Diet and Healthy Eating;  Body Image; Alcohol Abuse; Substance Misuse; Drugs and the Law; Sex Education, Contraception  and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

In Years 10 and 11 we have a specialist PSHCE carousel. Girls will follow short courses in Ethics, Health Education, Citizenship and Personal Safety.  In Form Time in these years tutors deal with PSHCE issues and Study Skills.

The Topics covered in Years 10-11 include:

Coping with Stress; Money Management; Personal Safety; Self Defence; Body Image & Healthy Eating; Eating Disorders; Benefits of Exercise; Self-harm; Alcohol Abuse; Substance Misuse; Skin Cancer, Breast & Cervical Cancer; Smoking; HIV and AIDS; Rape; Relationships; Contraception and Abortion; UK Democracy; Health and Education Services; Current Issues.

In the Sixth Form PSHCE slots are arranged at various times throughout the year and the issues raised are followed up by the Form Tutors.  The topics covered are tailored to the individual needs of the cohort and may vary from year to year.

Topics covered in the Sixth Form include:

Study Skills, Money Management, Relationships, Self-Confidence and Health Issues.

Confidentiality: When pupils under the age of sixteen discuss issues such as anorexia and self-harm with the School Nurses it is made clear to them at the beginning of the discussion that their parents may have to be informed.  When parents are informed, pupils will be made aware of this.

The Governors have approved the following Sex Education Policy for the school:

1.     Sex education will be provided in such a way as to encourage pupils to have regard to moral considerations and the value of family life.

2.     Sex education forms part of the core Science curriculum within the School. Issues relating to sex education may also be discussed in ethics and health education lessons or may be debated as part of the English curriculum.

3.     There are PSHCE (personal, social, health and citizenship education) lectures and seminars provided by specialist outside speakers for specific year groups: these cover topics such as contraception, AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Parents are informed in advance about these special sessions and have the right to withdraw their daughter from them.
