Botany Archives

There are numerous photographs showing the development of the Botany Gardens, from their origins in the 1890s, under Dr Lillian Clarke. As well as plant lists and invoices from local materials’ suppliers, the archives have Dr Clarke’s teaching notes, observations and photographs. These illuminate the history of JAGS science teaching.

Many pupils recalled her teaching with affection:

‘Her teaching in the lab was crisp and clean, you were expected to take it in quickly and somehow you did! Not ‘fearsome’ as a teacher although quite dominant, almost forbidding general appearance. You knew you had to be alert and receptive! Outdoor work was a speciality. Working in small groups in the various beds, she would be there, watchful and ready to advise or correct…you were aware of her keen interest’

As recalled in 2001 by Mrs Vera Vivian (Wightman) OG 1922-1926
