Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership Year 9 Event

The event, held on Tuesday 18th January 2011 at St Saviour’s and St Olave’s School, was organised by Inspiring Futures and was aimed at raising aspirations in Year 9 students. Ten Year 9 JAGS students were selected and were accompanied by Mrs Barratt.

The morning commenced with a lively ice-breaking exercise led by Jonathan Wilcox which was both humorous and effective, quickly allowing the students from the 9 participating schools to relax. Teams were then picked with 1 pupil from each school making up a 9 student team. Once the team had selected a team name, they were introduced, via various entertaining activities to their challenge which was to develop and market an innovative new product for the 2012 Olympics. Within the team, students formed a board of directors being responsible for different aspects of the campaign, such as advertising, financial and environmental considerations.

The product chosen was giant foam hands which would be sold to promote the 2012 Olympics and would ultimately be available within the various stadiums for people to purchase. Throughout the day, students worked within their teams to construct their product, design an advert which each group presented to the other groups and eventually to market their product over a 12 month period trying to make the largest profit possible.

As well as being enjoyable, the day gave students an opportunity to identify their skills, develop confidence and to establish a rapport with students who they previously did not know establishing new friendships as well as developing an awareness of business acumen.
