This year Winnie the Pooh and his friends were an equal match for ugly step sisters, a mouse, dalmatian and Stuart Little. Witches, Hogwarts teachers and Dumbledore took on Superman and Superwoman. There were Alices and White Rabbits, Tweedledee and Dum, and a Cheshire cat, mixed up with Macbeth, Doctor Who and Horrid Henry. Red Riding Hood posed with a Banana in Pyjamas. Eva came as Polly and her mum - a good sport - as Mr Gum. Upstairs the storytelling activities took on epic proportions. In groups the children invented encounters with marvellous villains, and imaginative ways of outsmarting them in fantasy land where trees are green and leaves are brown, the grass is glitter and it rains candy.
The play, set in WW2, written and performed by Yellow group children, presented challenges of spelling and pronunciation (pheasant, peasant, present). Jade, Zoe, Ethan and Ben, Tommy, Paddy, Joe and Alice confidently played evacuees discovering the joys of country life. "Milk comes from the milkman of course! In the city teachers actually know things."
The development of confidence and skills over the year is clear. It's a delight to see how the one-to-one teaching unlocks the personalities and encourages the children's self-belief. Please click here for photos
