Southwark Literacy Scheme

Saturday Literacy Scheme (SCEC)
In 1997, under the auspices of the Southwark Community Education Council, a registered charity, JAGS set up a Saturday Literacy Scheme. Pupils aged 6 or 7 years are sent to us from 10 local Southwark Primary Schools. These pupils are not statemented but are finding learning difficult because they are struggling to master literacy skills.

The Saturday School has five classes, each with up to eight or nine pupils, one specialist teacher and an individual mentor for each pupil. These mentors are volunteers from Years 10-12 at JAGS, who willing give up their Saturday mornings for the pleasure of helping their young partners to make progress. Each session ends with a presentation by one group to all the parents and the growth in the children’s confidence over the year is wonderful to see.

We are very grateful to SHINE and the DfES for their help in funding this scheme in recent years.
