                                                  Sparrow Schools World Premiere
A performance for the whole community
Prissian Theatre, 7pm Friday 3 October
                                                      James Allen’s Girls’ School

The specially commissioned piece for the UK tour, ‘Lavela Ilanga – The Sun Rose’ tells the story of Sophiatown, the birthplace of South African jazz in words, music and dance. The apartheid regime in 1955 bulldozed homes, re-named the town Triomphe and forcibly re-located the community. Today it is once again a vibrant, culturally diverse and musical community; most importantly, it is where you can find Sparrow Combined School.

Sparrow Schools children come from difficult backgrounds in Johannesburg. The Educational Trust provides pioneering, subsidised, skills-based education for young people with learning difficulties.

JAGS has had strong links with Sparrow Schools for many years; several JAGS gap year students work there as classroom assistants and the Gospel Choir raised nearly £1000 to help sponsor this UK tour, which helps to foster cultural links between young people in the UK and in South Africa .
