Community Sports Leader Award

The Community Sports Leader Award is a nationally recognised qualification enabling people over 16 to assist in sporting and recreational activities throughout the community. The course encourages participants to take responsibility for others, to develop organisational and communication skills and above all to increase self-confidence.

The Community Sports Leader Award (CSLA) is offered to Year 12 as part of their PE options programme. This enables them to gain a nationally recognized award which may allow them to assist in youth clubs and other such organizations. Part of their course involves them spending time in our local primary schools teaching the young pupils sport and games. The course also requires the pupils to organize competitions and throughout the year local primary and secondary schools are invited to JAGS to compete in a variety of sporting activities. The pupils are responsible for all the organization and the running of the competitions on the day of the event. They are also required to officiate at a sporting event and at various times of the year they assist in running school swimming galas.

JAGS girls are currently working with pupils from:

  • Heber School (State Primary)
  • Goodrich School (State Primary)
  • St Anthony School (State Primary)
  • Goose Green School (State Primary)
  • Dulwich Hamlet (State Primary)
  • James Allen's Preparatory School (Independent Prep)
  • Alleyn's (Independent Prep)
  • Rosemead (Independent Prep)

Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA) is offered to a limited number of girls from Year 12 to complete the course during their P.E lessons. I am currently drawing to the end of my course and working towards my final assessment. I enjoy working in the community doing various activities and CSLA allows me to take this qualification and teach sport in the community in my free time. To pass this award, you have to complete 3 sessions of being an umpire/referee/official in an event which qualified teachers set up, such as swimming galas, and netball matches. Once this is done, you have the opportunity to teach one lesson of sport to school groups who come to JAGS to use the fields and pitches. This was a great experience, even though the group looked rather frightening as they made their noisy approach across the fields.

Once I was set up with a group of eight girls, my session began. I took a warm up, skill practice and finally a match. I learnt that to make each child feel of worth and to make my teaching more personal, I must pick up there names quickly, helping to keep the groups focus, mostly because they were shocked that I had remembered their names. Something as simple as this can break the ice. The group worked well together and seemed to really enjoy the lesson as I adapted the work to them, such as making the warm up quite dance and movement based, instead of sport stretches, because they all loved to dance. This worked effectively and they wanted me to teach at their school, which made the afternoon a very positive experience for me. After this, you must take part in a basic first aid course and organise a festival for schools around the community to come to and learn a sport, such as athletics, which is your final assessment. CSLA is an enjoyable option to take for your P.E lessons in Year 12 and you come away from the year with an award to show for all your hard work!
