Botany Gardens

Dr Lilian Clarke, in charge of science at JAGS from 1896 to 1926, gave her pupils some of the most inspired and original teaching in the country. She was an enthusiastic pioneer in the practical teaching of science, learning by observation and experiment, and it is thanks to her that our Botany Gardens were established. She persuaded the Technical Board to provide JAGS with the country’s first school laboratory equipped solely for botanical study, and even introduced the study of bees to the girls, placing hives in the grounds.

Nowadays, the botany gardens are open to the public (by appointment). One day each year it is open to the public as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Girls are encouraged to be involved with the gardens, both through teaching and less formally with the Biology club which meets once a week. Girls grow plants of their choice in the gardens and monitor the bluetits with the newly installed birdbox camera.
