Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships and Bursaries
We may award up to 20 academic scholarships at JAGS on the results of the 11+ Entrance Examination. These include an instrumental Music scholarship and an Art scholarship. We also offer Sports Exhibitions to candidates showing outstanding sporting potential. These three awards have special procedures for selecting suitably gifted candidates: potential Music scholars are invited to audition, and candidates for the Art scholarship are asked to submit a sketchbook of work. Sports Exhibitioners will be called for sports aptitude tests. Music and Art scholarships may also be awarded for entry to the Sixth Form. Applications for Music, Art and Sports Scholarships and Exhibitions are invited once a candidate is registered for prospective entry.
Major scholarships are worth £1,000 pa, Minor scholarships are for £500 pa, in cases of need, the value of these scholarships may be increased by means-testing on the same basis as our assisted places. Under age candidates can be accepted for examination with the recommendation of their current headteacher. A limited number of Sixth Form scholarships of £1,000 pa are also available, based on achievement at GCSE.
James Allen's Bursaries
Since the withdrawal of the Government Assisted Places after 1997, we offer our own means-tested awards - James Allen's Bursaries - at 11+ and 16+.
These places are offered to girls who would benefit from a JAGS education but whose families are unable to afford the full fees and who have no substantial capital assets. There is a sliding scale of parents' contributions towards the fees, ranging from zero contribution to fees where the income is less than £13,000 pa to full fees being payable where gross income is over £55,000. More details are available here. At present, up to 17 Bursaries are available for 11+ entry and Sixth Form admission and they offer up to full-fee assistance, including lunches, travel, and uniform grants.
We have a continuing campaign to finance more Bursaries, as our aim is to increase the number of awards each year. No fee income is spent on Bursaries: we finance these through the Bursary Fund, from our investment income and from charitable gifts from parents past and present, Old Girls, former and current staff and other supporters of the school. Information on how to give to the 'James Allen’s Bursary Fund’ is here.
A one-off Bursary grant may be available during pupils’ examination years where families fall on hard times for no reason of their own making.
